Tục truyền cây hoa quỳnh là hóa thân của một nàng công chúa nhan sắc tuyệt trần, vì không chịu lấy anh mình là nhà vua nên bị đày ra đảo hoang. Không muốn gặp lại người anh tàn ác, nàng đã biến thành một loài hoa thơm đẹp, chỉ nở một lần vào ban đêm. Người Trung Quốc cũng có một truyền thuyết về hoa quỳnh liên quan đến Tùy Dạng Đế và Lý Thế Dân - người đã lập nên triều đại nhà Đường.

Selenicereus grandiflorus hay Epiphyllium oxypetallum là những giống xương rồng nguyên gốc Nam Mỹ thường được gọi Queen of the Night, Reine de la Nuit, Königer der Nacht…, vì hoa nở ban đêm nhưng cũng có giống nở ban ngày. Cây được dùng trong ngành liệu pháp vi lượng đồng cân, để chữa những chứng nhiễm khuẩn tiết niệu, viêm họng, co giật, xuất huyết… Trong dân gian, cây thường được dùng để chữa ngưng khạc ra máu, kinh nguyệt khó khăn. Nước vắt từ cây dùng chữa những chứng nhiễm khuẩn bọng đái, thiếu kém hơi thở. Cây cũng được tin là có tính chất kích dục.

ABSTRACT

Legend has it that the Phyllocactus was the transformation of a giamourous princess, who, since she refused to marry her brother, was exiled by the king to a wild island. So as never to see her immoral brother again, she turned herself into the plant with very fragant and graceful flowers which bloom just once in the quite of the night. The Chinese also have a legend about the Phyllocactus which is related to Tùy Dạng Đế and Lý Thế Dân- The founders of the Taïng Dynasty.

Selenicereus grandiflorus or Epiphyllum oxypetallum are cactus species orinating from the Antilles, Mexico, Centrel America. Commontly refered to Queen of the Night, Reine de la Nuit, Königer der Nacht...,certain species bloom of fact only during the night. The plant is used in homeopathy, recommeded for urinary tract infections, heart conditions such as the crushing pain of angina, for spasmodic pain and hemorrhage. In folk medicine, the plant has also  been used to treat the spitting up of blood sputum, and heavy or painful menstruel periods. The juice of the plant has been used for bladder infections, shortness of breath, and water retention. Applied externally, it has been used for rhumatism. It is also assumed to be an aphrodisiac.
