Đây là bản dịch toàn văn bài báo kể lại vụ đắm tàu Europe tại đảo Tri Tôn (thuộc quần đảo Hoàng Sa của Việt Nam) trên tuần báo Le Monde Illustré của Pháp xuất bản năm 1862. Theo đó, khi liên quân Pháp và Tây Ban Nha buộc phải rút khỏi Đà Nẵng, tàu Europe chở theo 1.100 lính Tây Ban Nha gốc Philippines đã va phải đá ngầm và bị đắm ở đảo Tri Tôn. Họ đã trải qua nhiều ngày khổ ải và tuyệt vọng trên đảo trước khi được tàu Norzagaray, một tàu hơi nước nhỏ của hải quân Pháp, từ Sài Gòn đến cứu thoát một cách hy hữu.Qua sự kiện này có thể hiểu được tại sao phần lớn các bản đồ Tây phương đều công nhận quần đảo Hoàng Sa thuộc chủ quyền Việt Nam, từ việc gọi tên đảo Tri Tôn theo tiếng Việt, đến kinh nghiệm ứng phó khi gặp sự cố đắm tàu tại vùng biển này đều phải cầu cứu chính quyền sở tại dọc theo bờ biển Việt Nam.

THE WRECK OF THE EUROPE IN PARACEL ISLANDS 
This is a full text of an article published on the French magazine Le Monde Illustré in 1862 about the wreck of the Europe near Tri Ton Island (belonging to the Paracel Islands of Vietnam). According to the article, when the French and Spanish coalition troops reluctantly withdrew from Đà Nẵng, the Europe carrying 1,100 Spanish-Filipino soldiers crashed the reef and sank near Tri Ton Island. The soldiers spent many days of misery and despair on the island before being rescued by the Norzagaray, a small French naval steamship, coming from Saigon.From this event it is understandable why most of the Western maps have recognized Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Paracel Islands; it is due to the Vietnamese name of Tri Ton Island and the asking for help from local authorities along the coast of Vietnam each time there was a shipwreck.
