Abstract

Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) cause heavy economic loss for the poultry production and have
transmitting ability of this virus from poultry to human. The live bird markets (LBMs) are suitable
places for storage and selling live poultry and it plays a significant role in circulation and spread
of AIVs. At present, quantitative assessment of the association between the AIV positive samples
and characteristics of the LBMs is lacking. The aim of this study was to characterize the status of
the LBMs and to identify the relationship between the avian influenza virus positive samples and
characteristics of the LBMs in some suburban districts of Ha Noi. The studied results showed that
characteristics of LBMs were very diverse. The rate between the number of LBMs and poultry
slaughterhouses, hatcheries in Ha Noi were all more than 50%. Two risk factors market schedule
and sales time were closely related to AIV positive samples
