Abstract

A study on identifying and selecting foot-and-mouth virus (FMDV) strain from the fields throughout Viet Nam for development of vaccine against FMD disease in animals was conducted. As a result, one FMDV, serotype O RAHO6/FMD/O-135 strain was selected from 118 field FMDV strains collecting from the FMD infected buffaloes, cattle and pigs during 2008 and 2015 in Viet Nam. The result of antigenic and molecular analysis for FMDV RAHO6/FMD/O-135 indicated that similarity level on the comparison indexes between this virus strain and the other field FMDV strains, such as PanAsia, Ind2001d, Mya-98 and Cathay strains (that were circulated and caused FMD outbreaks in Viet Nam) reached 100% and the r1 value was >0.3. The RAHO6/FMD/O-135 virus strain developed and adapted well in the BHK-21 cell medium. Vaccine produced from the RAHO6/FMD/O-135 virus was tested on cattle. The testing result indicated that 100% of the vaccinated cattle were protected with high titer of antibody in 21 days after vaccination. The studied results also indicated that the FMDV (RAHO6/FMD/O-135) was met with the standards of master seed for production of vaccine against FMD disease in Viet Nam.
