École Francaise d'Extrême-Orient in Vietnam, 1900-1957

Abstract

École Francaise d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) is among several largest academies in the world in the field of social sciences and humanities. The EFEO was established in accordance to the Degree of 15 December 1898. Yet the official name of EFEO was not given until January 1900. On 20 November 1901, the EFEO was institutionalized by a Decree signed by the French President.

In the period 1900-1957, the EFEO has published a good number of highly scientific researches on the history of the Indochinese and East Asian civilizations. As for Vietnam, the researches carried out by the EFEO provided data and information relating to the formation and development of various cultures in Vietnam in the past. The EFEO also contributed greatly to the collection of objects and documents on the ethnics living in Vietnam. This article aims to provide readers with a brief introduction on the formation, purpose, function, structure, and some activities of the EFEO in the period 1900-1957.
