OVERVOLTAGE INVESTIGATION OF WIND FARM UNDER LIGHTNING STROKES

Abstract

Wind power is increasingly developing to meet the rapidly increasing
demand of loads, in the context that traditional energy sources are increasingly
limited and not encouraged for development. However, wind power also has
many disadvantages, one of which is that the turbines are often struck by
lightning causing overvoltage affecting the operation of wind turbines. This
paper presents the conclusion of the study on the overvoltage in the wind power
farm when lightning strikes the wind turbine, analyzes some factors affecting
the lightning overvoltage in the wind farm such as the parameter of lightning
current, the system grounding system of the turbine to propose solutions to
reduce overvoltage in wind farm. In addition, the effect and role of the surge
arrester are also analyzed in the problem of surge protection installed on the low
and medium voltage side of the transformer connected to the wind turbine
generator. The results show that applying this solution can reduce the
overvoltage value caused by lightning on the low voltage side by up to 56%.
Research results are carried out by simulation program of electromagnetic
transients EMTP/ATP.
