A Decade Review of Divorce in Vietnam

After more than four decades of reunification since 1975, Vietnam has achieved remarkable results in social and economic development. From a very low starting point after centuries of war, the economy has taken off strongly which dramatically improved people’s living standard, incomes, infrastructural services, and maintained social stability. The government promoted gender equality through gender equality campaigns, which dramatically improved women’s rights and status in the family and in the entire society. With the rapid speed of modernisation recently, the society has untied many old values of family and individual freedom. Marriage and family are believed to experience a significant transition from the traditional style to more modern and liberal characteristics.

Using the annual statistics on all divorces at the Supreme People’s Court until 2018 and two district courts in ten years 2000-2009; this paper attempts to examine the prevalence, patterns and how the reported reasons of divorce varied with structural factors, gender, cultural and demographics life course in transforming new and traditional Vietnam in a decade from 2000-2009.
