Abstract

On September 7, 2024, super typhoon Yagi caused significant damage to human lives, infrastructure, and social life in the northern provinces of Vietnam. In that context, the widespread of fake news on social media created confusion, hindered relief efforts, and heightened the challenges of disaster response. This study investigates the relationship between digital literacy (DL) and information behavior (IB) among Hanoi residents in responding to fake news during the emergency caused by super typhoon Yagi.

The research was conducted with 100 residents aged 40-55 from two areas: Cau Giay District and Chuong My District (Song Bui). This group consists of infrequent social media users who primarily rely on traditional media channels such as television and radio. Through a 25-item questionnaire based on international scales, the study assesses participants’ understanding of fake news, their strategies for verifying information, and changes in IB before and after exposure to fake news.

The findings not only reveal differences in IB between the two surveyed areas but also propose solutions to enhance DL and promote appropriate IB. These solutions aim to improve the ability to identify and respond effectively to fake news, thereby mitigating future consequences.
