In Vietnam, paraquat is one of the most popular herbicides intensively used in agriculture. However, in
recent years, this compound has been prohibited in agricultural cultivation because of indiscriminate uses
and negative effects on the environment and human health. Direct analysis of paraquat, diquat and
chlormequat in environmental samples including arable land meets with difficulties because these
substances have simple structures, high polarity and ability to form complexes with anions existing in
sample matrix. In this study, we have developed a method to directly determine paraquat, diquat and
chlormequat with the help of UPLC-MS/MS system coupled with a suitable sample preparation process.
The method had wide linear range (R2>0.995), high sensitivity (limits of detection from 0.30 g/kg to 0.50
g/kg and limits of quantification from 1.0 g/kg to 2.0 g/kg), recoveries ranged from 96.5% to 109.4%,
The highest RSDr and RSDwr were 6.9% and 10.9% (<25%), respectively. The study has successfully
fabricated the method to direcly analyze paraquat, diquat and chlormequat in arable land.
