A SURVEY ON THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ TRANSLATION MISTAKES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LANGUAGES AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES - VNU

Abstract

This paper presents the study of translation mistakes by the third year students of the University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS) - VNU. Based on an analytical framework of translation mistakes in terms of content and form mistakes, the authors carried out a survey of 406 translation assignments from week 1 to week 7 and the mid-term tests by 58 students in the frst semester of the academic year of 2017-2018. The survey result shows a variety of translation mistakes related to grammar, word choice, stylistics, pragmatics, and even typing. Finally, the authors propose some solutions to improve students’ translation quality in the next
classes of translation.
