Abstract

Blue carbon accumulates in ocean ecosystems and coastal ecosystems, including mangrove ecosystems. The blue carbon in this study was carried out in the mangrove forest area of Xuan Thuy National Park. The study used many different methods to evaluate and quantify the value of accumulated and exchanged carbon to calculate the value of accumulated carbon in mangroves. Study results show that mangroves have a total accumulated blue carbon of 208.18 MgC ha-1 , of which the carbon stored below ground accounts for over 81% of the total. Carbon exchange in water depends largely on the tidal cycle and the seasons of the year (rainy season, dry season). This trend is similar to the value of carbon
emitted from sediment and water to the atmosphere. The study calculated the total carbon input and output of mangroves were 13.51 ± 5.60 MgC ha-1 year-1 and 13.13 ± 5.27 MgC ha-1 year-1 , respectively. From these values, the study determined that the carbon accumulated in biomass and sediment of the mangroves was 7.29 MgC ha-1 year-1 . This is a very large cumulative blue carbon value. Research results show that mangroves are a blue carbon sink and reduce carbon emissions to the atmosphere.
