Abstract

Importance of criteria affecting riverbank erosion is graded by determining the weight of the factors,
based on statistics of measurement results, analyzing the composition of the factors. The analysis
method (Anatycal Hiearchy Process - AHP) of Saaty (1980) is often used to determine the weight of the
factors more appropriately. AHP is based on the principle of comparison between pairs of factors by the
"smart pairwise comparison" method. The research results of applying AHP to assess the risk of river
bank erosion in the downstream Dong Nai river system is presented in this paper. Results of the erosion
risk zoning show that the lower Dong Nai River has about 5% of its length at high risk of erosion, 24%
of the length of the riverbank at medium risk of erosion and 55% of its length at low risk of erosion. The
areas with high erosion risk contain the sections passing Binh Loi commune, Vinh Cuu district, Dong
Nai province, Dinh Dinh and Tan Uyen districts of Binh Duong
