Modelling concrete behaviour under compression by discrete element method using PFC2D

Abstract

Modelling the mechanical behaviour of material is one of main interest in studying concrete or any
other engineering material. In this paper, the discrete element method (DEM) was applied to simulate
the behaviour of concrete under compression loading. An assemblage of circle particles was used to
model the concrete. The particles in assemblage were binded together to create intact material.
Parrallel bond model was used for the contacts between particles. The presence of aggregate and
mortar in concrete was modelled by 2 different groups of particles. The results show that DEM can
reproduce well the behavior of concrete. DEM enable the study the behavior of material from micro
scale and allow us to study the influence of microparameters to the mechanical behavior of material.
