Conservation principles and measures for traditional values of housing architecture along the rivers and canals of the Mekong delta region

Abstract

    The land of the Mekong Delta has a system of intertwined rivers and canals with diverse nature.Waterways have been the main means of transportation for long ago. The activities of local people(trading and exchanging of goods, farming, agricultural producing ...) are associated withtheDelta. In fact, the values that have been formed since ancient times, such as floating markets,famous islands and its typical surroundings of the Southern Vietnam waterways, are at risk ofdisappearing for several reasons. From the perspective of preserving the traditional values, thehousing architecture along the waterways is also in the spirit of finding and promoting the inherentbehavior of the residents based on architectural aspects, architectural morphology, clusters,contributing to increasing awareness of an essential type of housing that is indispensable in theregion.
