Researching solutions improving the operationnal efficiency of hydropower in the context of Vietnam power demand and market

Abstract

    Hydropower has a high proportion in the composition of Vietnam power system. This proportion tends to decrease, leading to a change in the working position of hydropower station. The diagram of power demand also changes in the direction of the disadvantage for hydropower. High demand for power occurs in the months when the capacity of the hydropower station is limited. In addition, the power market is moving to a competitive market that requires hydropower stations, in design as well as in operation, to make appropriate changes. This article presents the scientific basis, which provides solution considering the power demand and the power market in order to increase the available capacity, thereby improving the operational efficiency of hydropower and at the same time reducing system costs. The obtained results from application for two hydropower stations in Sesan rivers show the effectiveness of the methodology.
