Abstract

In recent years, many floods have occurred in downstream areas of rivers in Vietnam, causing great damage to agricultural production and people's life. In Thanh Hoa province, there are two large rivers, the Chu and Ma rivers. The discharge of these rivers is very large but unevenly distributed in seasons of the year. In the three months of the flood season, the total amount of water flowing into the sea is 17-18 billion m3 , accounting for 70% to 72% of the total water volume. The water levels of the Ma River and the Chu River are high and threaten some river dykes, which can cause inundation in the downstream area and adversely affect the socio-economic development of Thanh Hoa province. Therefore, flood control solutions are needed for this river system. In this paper, the one-dimensional flow mathematical model (MIKE 11 software) was used to calculate the hydraulics of the Chu-Ma river system flowing through the territory of Thanh Hoa province. In the Chu and Ma river basins, many reservoirs have been and will be constructed for the purpose of generating electricity and reducing floods in downstream areas. The flow from these reservoirs into the river system is simulated in the hydraulic model and calculated in many different cases. Since then, the authors of this paper have evaluated the effectiveness of flood prevention of upstream reservoirs and proposed general solutions for flood control to ensure safety for the downstream area of the river system in Thanh Hoa province.
