EXTRACTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MICROFIBRILLATED CELLULOSE FROM DRAGON FRUIT PEEL (HYLOCEREUS SPP.) AND ITS APPLICATIONS
In this study, microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) was successfully extracted from dragon fruit peel by-products through three stages, including: pretreatment with 1M NaOH at 90⁰C for 2 hours, bleaching with 3% H2 O2 at 80⁰C for 2 hours, and hydrolysis with 1M HNO3 at 90⁰C with reaction times varying from 4 to 8 hours. The obtained MFC was converted into carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) through etherification with monochloroacetic acid in an ethanol solvent activated with NaOH at 60°C for 2 hours. MFC and CMC products were characterized in terms of morphology and structure using FTIR infrared spectra, SEM images, and XRD diffraction. CMC product had the DS value of 0.4, an average molecular weight of 21,937g/mol, CrI of 52.46%. Moreover, the thickening ability of CMC has also been determined. The obtained results showed that cellulose product has potential applications in many fields, such as food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and raw materials for bioplastic production.
