Objectives: In addition to ultrasound, two clinical formulas – the classic and McDonald were used for fetal weight estimation (FWE) in Vietnam. The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of ultrasound, classic formula and McDonald formula, in FWE in Vietnam. Subjects and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study performed on 104 mother-neonate pairs at the Delivery Department of Haiphong hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Fetal weight was estimated at term by ultrasound and two clinical formulas; the actual birth weight was also recorded immediately after birth. The absolute error percentage in FWE between actual birth weight and FWE of each method was the index used to evaluate the accuracy of the estimates, <10% was considered accurate, >10% was considered inaccurate. The absolute error percentages in FWE in actual birth weight groups also were compared in each method. Results: Ultrasound was the most accurate method (88.5%), McDonald was more precise than classic (76%, 73.1%, respectively) in FWE. Normal birth weight 2501-3500g was highly accurate estimated by all methods. Conclusions: Ultrasound was the most accurate method to FWE.
