Abstract

Based on an empirical study, the paper highlights that with a function to convey managerial and legal information, sentences in administrative texts have particular features such as they are usually long, they prefer S-V order types, they use cliches without redundances, modalities, and only narrative and directives are present, interrogative sentences are never used, etc. Issues exist with the usage of sentences in administrative texts in contemporary Vietnamese which need to be monitored. The paper therefore discusses the following issues relating to the standardization of sentences in administrative texts: 1) sentences should be short with logical structures; 2) when a long sentence is a must, it is better to split the sentence into different lines so that the information elements are clearly presented; 3) there is no need to use structures with inverted word order; 4) it is better not to use negative sentences to express legal rules; and 5) there is a need to increase the modelization of specialized constructions in each type of administrative texts.
