On the methods of teaching French Literature

Abstract

The teaching of French literature changes with different viewpoints from different ‘super readers’ who exploit literary works in their teaching. The traditional methodology dignifies the roles of the authors and pays little attention to the readers - the learners. Because the literary texts are then closed with only one meaning, teachers generally impose the only way of understanding when teaching, discouraging learners’s critical and creative thinkings. Besides, the audio-visual method deforms the literary works trying to compact and simplify the texts, turning the texts into materials for speaking practice. The combination of the communicative approach and genre teaching in the analysis of texts requires the teachers to approach the texts basing on the words and reading between the lines. The final aim of this teaching method is to discover more meanings of the texts and more importantly to encourage learner’s critical and creative abilities during their perception of the literary works.
