Abstract

Through an analysis of language attitude the choice of modal partical in a Northern  dialect community in Ho Chi Minh city, the paper points out a meaningfull relation between language attitude and language choice. The results suggest that the orthern dialect community in Ho Chi Minh city has a possitive attitude to Northern variants  and  a negative attitude to Southern variants in their speech community.  The results also supply important evidences about the correlation between language attitude and language choice. As the result, the positive attitude to a certain variant can make speakers accept and choose that variant, on the contrary,  the  negative attitude to a certain variant can make speakers not to accept and not to choose the variant to communicate.
