Abstract

In this paper, we would like to propose and develope a model for descirbing and characterizing a 3 x 3 multimode interference (MMI) coupler. A novel description matrix of the MMI coupler, which takes into account the effect of higher order modes in the structure, is developed. A design approach that is based on this matrix description is proposed. The positionsof the access waveguides entering the MMI were optimized. The design an simulations were carried out using Silicon on Insulator (SOl) technology
