Flood control in the Long Xuyen Quandrangle
Abstract
Major tasks of the flood control in the Long Xuyen Quadrangle was to master floods crossing from the Cambodian border by a system of dikes, channels, and viaducts. Flows into the acid sulfate soils areas of Ha Tien Quadrangle has reclaimed this vast land area, from which flooding water flushes out to the West Sea by the shortest route. The restriction of flows crossing the Cambodian border into the Long Xuyen Quadrangle makes favourable conditions for the sediment-rich water of Hau river to enter the Quadrangle andenrich this land area. In the disastrous flooding event of 2000, the flood control construction system in the Long Xuyen Quadrangle remained stable and fully met the previously set-up requirements:
-Ensuring a full harvest of the autumn-summer crop for the provinces of An Giang and Kien
Giang.
-Reclaiming the acid sulfate soils areas of Ha Tien Quadrangle into agricultural lands.
-Lowering peaks of floods, shortening the flooding periods in the Long Xuyen Quadrangle
and reducing flood pressure for constructions in the interior fields.
-Bringing sediment-rich water of Hau river to the interior fields.
-The landscape of this area has remarkably been changed.
