THE IMPACT OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE ON ECONOMIC GROWTH - AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE PERIODS BEFORE AND AFTER VIETNAM’S ACCESSION TO THE WTO

Abstract

This study examines the impact of international trade on economic growth
in the periods before and after Vietnam's accession to the WTO. The study
collected time series data at the quarterly frequency of economic growth and
international trade in Vietnam during the period from the first quarter of 2002 to
the first quarter of 2018. The vector autoregressive (VAR) model is used in the
study, and the study results show that international trade has a statistically
significant impact on economic growth in the periods before and after Vietnam's
accession to the WTO. In addition, the research results also reflect the role of the
WTO in economic growth in Vietnam, proving that Vietnam has deeply
integrated into the global economy after WTO accession.
