Abstract
The valence theory was developed by L. Tesnière - a French linguist,
appearing in the 50s of the twentieth century. This theory brought a new
approach to grammar. This article focuses on clarifying some basic issues of
valence theory, the theory of approaching grammar from semantic and function
to know how this theory contribute in grammatical research. On that basis, this
article also reviews some typical works applying valence theory to Vietnamese
grammar research to see the development of this theory in Vietnam.
