Anemia in pregnant women in four communes of Thoi Lai District, Can Tho City in 2017

Objectives: Thoi Lai is a rural district of Can Tho city. Communication activities for prevention of anemia among pregnant women in the district are limited. The study was conducted with the aim of describing the status of anemia in pregnant women and some associated factors (age, occupation, educational level, gestational age, number of pregnancies, oral administration of iron tablets) in 4 Communes of Thoi Lai district.

Methods: The study was designed using cross-sectional descriptive and analytic method, and conducted from March to July, 2017. Study participants included 213 pregnant women in 4 communes of Thoi Lai district, Can Tho city. The study data collection method was to take blood samples of pregnant women for laboratory testing to assess anemia status and to interview pregnant women according to the structured questionnaires.

Results: The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in Thoi Lai district was 20.2%; among pregnant women with anemia, the majority had mild anemia (83.7%), 16.3% had moderate anemia. Statistical results showed that the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women without correct iron tablets intake was higher with statistical signifcance than those correctly taking iron tablets (OR = 3.0, (95% CI: 1.5 to 6.0), p < 0, 05).

Conclusion: This study serves as an important scientifc basis for the health sector in Thoi Lai district to develop effective intervention programs to reduce the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in the district.
