Main Solutions for the Sedge Making Development in Kim Son, Ninh Binh Province

Abstract

Kim Son is a coastal district of Ninh Binh province. Recently, the district has attempted to push up the growth of non-farming sector, of which sedge making is the first priority. In 2006, there were 28,000 households and 41 enterprises involving in sedge making and trading. Eight millions products in about 2,000 product categories like sedge mat, sedge tray, sedge box, etc were produced. The total production value, in 2006, was more than 190 billions VND, accounting for 82.1% of the provincial industrial sector, of which about 123 billions VND were from the export. However, the sedge making in Kim Son still faces some problems and challenges like: under-utilization of resources for sedge making, small-scale production and processing, high costs of production, low profit, low level of technological application for sedge making, low labor productivity, inadequate infrastructure, insufficient supports and assistance from the government, etc. Thus, this research focus to analyze current status of sedge making in the district and identify the main solutions for development of  the sedge making in Kim Son district.
