Abstract

This study was conducted to describe the botanic characteristis and evaluate agronomic characters and metal content of six buck wheat cultivars collected from northern part of Vietnam and Japan. The buck wheat cultivars were sown at three different dates in the 2006 spring season. Buck wheat cultivars differed in flower structure, flowering and fruit size. The average growth duration of buck wheat cultivars at different sowing time varied between 75 to 96 days. The plant height of buck wheat cultivars at harvest was 64.2, 66.1 and 81.2 cm at first, second and third sowing time, respectively. At flowering time, the average number of first branches and  total number of leaves and per plant was in  a range of 3.1 - 4.2 and 9.5 - 11.2, respectively. Among the cultivars, M5 and M6 had the greatest grain yield of 577 and 645 kg per ha, respectively. The iron content ranged from 5.0 to 11.4 mg/100 g. M1 cultivars possessed both highest content of Zn (41.9 mg/100 g) and Cu (141.2 mg/100 g), whearas the highest Mg (301.2 mg/100 g) and Ca (262.0 mg/100 g) content was found in M5
