Abstract
A survey was carried out to determine composition of plankton in water areas in Gialam district of Hanoi. Water samples were taken from 5 ponds and lakes and 5 low-lying fields in Gialam district at 3 different times of the day every week to assess physical and chemical parameters and plankton composition. Some parameters were found to be good for growth of aquatic species, except temprature, COD, total iron and H2S. The plankton composition was rich in species with 36 zooplankton species in 13 families and 3 groups (Copepoda, Cladocera and Rotatoria) and 28 phytoplankton species in 12 families and 4 groups (Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta and Euglenophyta). There were significant differences in plankton species between ponds/lakes and low-lying fields. The density and biomass of zooplankton were low and higher in ponds or lakes than in low-lying fields
