Abstract

Son La, a mountainous province in Northern Vietnam, is known with concentrated commodity production zones that favored its natural characteristics, especially tea and sugar-cane productions. Within each production zone, the cooperation between processing enterprises and producers under farming contract has been diversified recently. The study surveyed 8 tea - processing plants and 60 tea growers in Moc Chau, 4 sugar cane processing plants and 60 sugar-cane producers in Mai Son. The
survey reveals that there are typically 4 models of contract farming: commitment of land on company’s side, commitment of input investment, commitment of input materials provision, and output contract. By exploring the characteristics and performance of typical farming contracts, the study estimates the welfare share between producers and enterprises. Base on the research result, recommendations are: i/ Promote the role played by companies in contract farming; ii/ Apply flexible and various models of
contract farming and iii/Improve the mutual benefits among the contract’s stakeholders.
