Land Use in Ba Lat Estuary, Giao Thuy District, Nam Dinh Province

Abstract

The aim of the research is to evaluate land use status in order to propose sustainable agricultural land use in Balat estuary, Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province. The field survey ứa carried out to collect primary and secondary data to identify land use types and it’s economic efficiency combining with satellite image interpretation for standardizing land use map and evaluating the land use change in the investigated area. In 2010, Ba Lat estuary of Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province had total area of 15,100 ha, in which, agricultural land had the largest area of 7,766.89 ha, accounted for 51.44%; non-agricultural land had area of 2.270,71 ha, accounted
for 15.04%, unused land had 974.74 ha with 6.46% and coastal wetland of 4087,66 ha, accounted for 27.07% of total natural area. There were 6 land use types with 17 agricultural land use types, in which, LUT rice, LUT forest, and LUT aquaculture were 3 main land use types of the area. Land use change trend varied differently in 5 communes of bufferzone and intensive exploitation areas. Land use change depended on economic aspects, but it less depend on environmental impacts; On the other hand, land use change following environmental protection trend in the limit exploitation and strictly protected subdivision areas. In ecological recovery subdivision, land use based on rehabilitation purpose did not meet the expectation.
