The walking snakehead group is under genus Channa (Channidae, Perciformes). Two species, which are Channa orientalis Bloch & Schineider, 1801 và Channa gachua (Hamilton, 1822), have been
recorded in the world. The general characteristics of the walking snakehead group are: the dorsal, anal and caudal margins have pink or yellow color (fish sample reserved have white color). There have been many points of view and debates regarding to the identification of this species, making it
difficult to usethe right literature. Since 1964, information and samples of walking snakehead fish have been collected in many provinces from the North to the South of Vietnam. Methodused includedmorphological identification and comparative anatomy, with samples operated and
compared. The characteristics of two species of the walking snakehead group as well as their distribution have been identified. C. orientalis Bloch & Schineider, 1801 distributes in Northern provinces and C. gachua (Hamilton, 1822) distributes in Southern provinces of Vietnam. The
description, comparison and key characteristics of these two species were defined by the authors. The results contribute to the knowledge base for identification of the walking snakehead group under genus Channa in Vietnam.
