Abstract

A study was carried out on 5 stress negative Piétrain boars including 3 boars of halothane genotype CC and 2 of CT imported from Belgium and raised at Dong Hiep livestock farm in order to evaluate semen quality, effects of genotypes (CC and CT) and seasons of the year (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter) on semen quality. Results showed that semen volume, sperm motility, sperm concentration, total number of sperms moving straight ahead per each ejaculation, heteromorphic rate, spermatozoon resistance and pH of semen were 277.27 ml, 0.77, 310.49 millions/ml, 68.81 billions, 5.16 %, 7374.10 and 7.27, respectively. The quality of semen of boars with genotype CC was better than that of those with CT (P<0.05). The season did not significantly influence semen volume, although semen quality was better in Winter worser in Summer. However, the semen traits of stress negative Piétrain boars in all seasons were in accordance to the Provisional Regulations on economic and technical criteria for animal breeds by Decision No. 67/2002/QĐ-BNN (Ministry of Agriculture and
Rural development, Vietnam).
