Initial Results of Research on the Possibility of Using Jatropha Oil for Diesel Engines

Abstract

This paper presents some research findings on the process of pressing oil from Jatropha seeds. Jatropha oil samples were analyzed at Petroleum Products Analysis Laboratory - VILAS 292, Hanoi, Vietnam and Sustainable Energy Research Centre, Rostock, Germany. Some properties of Jatropha oil as calorific value and self-burning temperature are nearly identical to the values of Diesel fuel. Jatropha oil was tested with the DF-S1100N engineon the engine test equipment. Characteristic curves outside of the engine were determined with two types of fuel. The experimental results showed that Jatropha oil has fuel properties completely consistent for use in small engines in Vietnam. Its ability to develop power and torque is no different than the engine used diesel fuel. Rotational speed reached the torque peak is also broader. To firmly conclusions about the possibility of using Jatropha oil for diesel engines, we are continuing our research; the results will be published on the next paper
