Abstract

A total of thirty milking cows at three different stages of lactation were fed total mixed ration (TMR) and in traditional way (concentrate and forages provided separately) to evaluate the efficacy of feeding TMR in raising dairy cattle. It was shown that feeding TMR brought about significant technical effects but economic benefit could only come when the household raised above a certain number of cows. Cows fed TMR showed significant increses in dry matter intake, milk yield, and milk quality. In small scale farms (under 23 milking cows), feeding TMR did not bring economic benefits compared with traditional feeding due to high investment in equipment . From 23 milking cows the cost of milk was reduced and thus resulted in economic benefits.
