Abstract

This experiment was conducted in Tay Bac University’s net house to examine the effects of water stress on the rate of photosynthesis (IQH), transpiration intensity (ITHN), water use efficiency (WUE), leaf water retention (RWL), specific leaf area (SLA) and yield of upland rice grown in Thuan Chau of Son La. The findings indicated that Thuan Chau upland rice varieties had higher photosynthetic intensity and water use efficiency compared to the control variety (CH5). At the heading stage, leaf water retention of all rice varieties fluctuated from 9.6 to 28.4% after 24 hours water withdrawal. Specific leaf area ranged from 190.9 cm2/g to 259.9 cm2/g. Four upland varieties had higher RWL, but all had lower SLA compared with the control variety. Water stress at tillering and especially at headig stage significantly reduced grain yield by 29.5% to 54.1%. The control variety showed highest reduction in yield.
