Investigating of the use of satellite images and GIS for developing land uses changes maps of Buon Ma Thuot City from 2000 to 2009

Abstract

This research introduces application satellite imagines and GIS for developing land-use change maps of Buon Ma Thuot city from 2000 - 2009 with using digital image processing method by ENVI 4.3 software and spatial analyst by ARCVIEW 3.2 software. The results show that the changes in urban landuse have been identified with high accuracy. In 9 years (i.e. 2000 - 2009), the unchangeable area was 31923.96 hectare with 85.68% of total natural area. The area of agricultural land has been transferred to non - farming land was 2010.47 hectare, with 5.50% of the total studied area. The method using SPOT image data can be only used for identifying the change in some major land-use units, but it can not be used for dentifying landuse changes in detail. This research suggests that the scenario of choosing image taken from the same season in a year for high accuracy map of urban land use change, and in order to avoid cloud, frost effects on results of image interpretation.
