Study on Selection of Varieties and Suitable Mulching Material for Eggplant in Giao Liem Commune, Son Dong District, Bac Giang Province

Abstract

Giao Liem in a mountainous commune of the district Son Dong in Bac Giang province. Relying mostly on  rainfed farming the crop yields are often low due to  drought occurrence. Thus, selection of suitable crop varieties, including eggplant and mulching practices is essential. Among two improved varieties of eggplant plant tested in comparison with the local genotype it was found that the Two Red Arrow variety was superior in terms of growth, fruit yield and adaptation to rainfed conditions. This variety can be adopted to replace the spring rice crop in eggplant - summer rice - winter garlic rotation. Mulching practice tested with Two Red Arrow variety indicated that rice straw - locally available material - could be efficiently used for improving eggplant fruit yield and economic efficiency
