Abstract

A survey was carried out on 45 pig farms in Gia Lam district to investigate the level of application of veterinary hygiene measures for farm biosecurity. Results showed that only 5 out of 45 surveyed  had their farm designs which met the sector standards in terms of infrastructure. The number of farms assessed as  average and poor was 14 and 17, respectively. However, the was a good number of households well complying with the regulations for hygiene of animal feed was fairly high. It was also revealed that application of measures for disease control was good in 7 farms, while the remaining was at the level of average and poor. Most farms used water taken directly from ponds, lakes (26.67%) or drilling wells without treatment (60.00%). Many of the households were not concerned about improving the quality of animal house air, and, as a consequence, the concentration of NH3 and H2S ứa higher than the levels allowed. Although pig production at the households was at a semi-intensive level, the application of veterinary hygiene measures in most them was assessed as average and poor
