Abstract

The annual demand of vegetable oil per capita increased steadily. Besides  the traditional oil plants such as, groundnut, sesame... development of other new oil crops such as canola (Brassica napus L.) is necessary. After two years extensive testing, we concluded that the climate in the high elevation regions of Viet  Nam is suitable to grow this crop in Autumn-winter period. In Lam Dong, we selected some canola hybrids, i.e. 07821-1RA, HSR-104 and HSR-802 with average high seed yield (2550 - 2900 kg/ha), high oil yield (1060 - 1190 kg/ha), and growth duration between 90 - 122 days. In Son La, we selected Hyola 61 and 07821-1RA with seed yield 1690 - 1930 kg/ha, oil yield 710 - 820 kg/ha and growth duration of 122 days. In Lam Dong the suitable population for canola was 50 plant/m2, and time point at 70% pod ripening was most suitable harvesting time for high seed yield, high oil content,  high oil yield and good seed quality
