Primary Selection of Some Elite Avocado (Persea americana Mills.) Stocks in the Western Central Highland

Abstract

Investigation and selection of superior avocado stocks were aimed at meeting the demand for domestic consumption and export and to replace existing low yielding, low quality avocado populations in the central highland of Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Gia Lai and Lam Dong provinces. The selection criteria were based on descriptors of IPGRI and general reference on  commercial standards set by UNECE STANDARD FFV-42 and Codex standard for Avocado-Codex standard 197-1995. A total of 12 superior stocks were selected which have an average yield over 300kg fruits/tree/year and fruit flesh over 70% expressed in percentage of weight. Among 12 stocks 7 trees show late maturity,  3 with early maturity and 2 trees with maturity in the main cropping season. These elite avocado stocks may serve as valuable materials for future studies
