Abstract

The increasing price of main raw materials for animal feed processing and its dependence on imported has resulted in higher price of animal feed in comparison with the neighboring countries, leading to animal sector of the country is not well developed as it should be. This research is conducted in 4 provinces of Son La, Ha Tay, Daclak and Dong Nai in order to analyze the economic efficiency, comparative and competitive advantages of maize and soybean production in the context of global economic integration. The study is also expected to contribute some policy recommendations for further improvement of the competitiveness of maize and soybean production as well as expanding the area planted of these crops to satisfy the demand of raw materials for animal feed processing. The result of the study shown that the government policies on the one hand give incentive for maize and soybean producers but on the other hand pose disincentive for them throughout implementing import taxes of the inputs for these crops production. All provinces in the study site have comparative advantages in maize production, but the competitive advantages are only shown in Son La and Daclak. For soybean, with the exception of Ha Tay, other provinces have comparative advantages but only Daclak has competitive advantages, other provinces have disadvantages in soybean production.
