Abstract

The study was undertaken to determine the prevalence and the role of  C. perfringens in pigs found with diarrhoea in Hanoi and some surrounding areas. The studied regions included: Gia Lam, Cau Dien, Ha Tay (old-established), Bac Ninh and Vinh Phuc. Results showed that the prevalence of identified C. perfringens in faecal samples of pigs with diarrhoea was 55.6%. The number of C. perfringens in faecal samples of pigs with diarrhoea increased signficantly compared to that of healthy ones. In 1 - 28 day-old piglets, the number of C. perfringens was 1.92 ± 0.08 x 107 CFU/g compared to 1.74 ± 0.07 x 105 CFU/g (increased 110.34 times). In 29 - 90 day-old pigs, the number of C. perfringens was 4.19 ± 0.61 x 107 CFU/g compared to  2.88 ± 0.10 x 105 CFU/g (increased 145.49 times) (P <0.001). There was no significant difference in the prevalence of  identified C. perfringens in the samples taken from the different  areas and age-groups (P > 0.05)
